Christians in Secular Entertainment

‘Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples; But the Lord will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising’ (Isaiah 60:1-3).

Many Christians are now being called to the mission field of secular entertainment. They are called to be role models, examples, and performers for Christ—who walk, sing, dance, and model in love. But isn’t this mission field a mine field? How do you prepare for it? Can you maintain your faith and integrity in this world?

Whenever we are faced with tough questions, we find guidance in God’s Word. Many heroes in the Bible had similar missions, like Sarah, Esther, and Daniel. At the beginning of the Book of Daniel, Daniel and others are taken captive. They are moved from Israel to Babylon. They are chosen because they are among the most gifted young men in the nation.

Once there, Daniel and his friends are trained to work in the Babylonian government. In this foreign land, they learn a new culture and a new language. They cannot condemn it, even though Babylon is a pagan nation with false gods. They respect the laws of the land without violating their most sacred laws of faith.

Daniel excelled in Babylon. The Bible says that he, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego had ‘knowledge and intelligence’ (Daniel 1:17) and the king found them ‘ten times better than all.. who were in his realm’ (v.20). They rose to levels of prominence.

Eventually, God worked through them to change an entire nation.

Consider Babylon to be Hollywood or New York. It’s a foreign culture with rules that outsiders do not understand. Watching a TV show, movie, or video does not qualify us to compete and win—nor does talent alone.

Like Daniel, actors, models and talent for Christ must prepare. Once there, they must adapt and serve in the kingdom of entertainment with excellence and without condemnation—but always remember Who matters most.

God has provided a clear bridge to Hollywood and New York through AMTC. He will also provide His performers the strength they need to continue to serve Him, as they cross over to the other side.
