Beautiful Minds – Extra Credit

New York Times Style Magazine

by Edward Barsamian

Meet the model students — the hard-working women wearing the best of fall’s back-to-school-inspired looks in the photographer Angelo Pennetta’s portfolio “Beautiful Minds.” Here, they tell T about life on campus, hitting the sales racks versus the stacks, and how to prep for everything from costume parties to pop quizzes. The first of a two-part series.

Sonia Dara

Harvard University (class of 2013), Majoring in economics with a secondary in human evolutionary biology and citation in Spanish

At age 21, Dara recently interned for Tyra Banks, whose trailblazing strides for minority models she is already emulating. She is the first model of South Asian descent to be in Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue, and like banks she hopes one day to shift from model to mogul. ‘‘i really enjoyed the exposure to the business side of fashion,’’ says the third year economics major at Harvard of her internship. ‘‘not to mention learning the ropes from someone that i really look up to.’’

WHERE TO SHOP.COM

When there’s time, I shop on Newbury Street, but more often I resort to ASOS and Gilt. They deliver to my dorm! Here’s a tip: the vintage stores between Harvard and M.I.T. are good, but Oona’s on Massachusetts Avenue is the best for costume parties.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

I do tutoring in Boston at the Mission Hill After School Program, and I’ve been involved in the Undergraduate Council, too.

TEAM SPIRIT

The biggest football event of the year is the Harvard-Yale game in November. Crew is also popular, and people get really into the Head of the Charles, a regatta on the Charles River.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

It seems to me that the New England look includes at least one of the following: a Barbour jacket, Tory Burch flats, Hunter boots or a Longchamp bag.

MIDNIGHT SNACK

Nothing beats Pinocchio’s Pizza, which has the best Sicilian slice ever, and Zoe’s is great for breakfast food cravings at random hours.
