Hiding Your Talent

And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground.
Matthew 25:25 (NAS)

The biblical use of the word ‘talent’ refers to a measure of currency—something precious and valuable.

Today, we think of a ‘talent’ as a gift or aptitude. Both definitions apply to those who work in the talent industry. God has given valuable gifts that He intends us to use to help others and glorify Him.

In the Parable of the Talents, a master (the Lord) gives each of three servants talents to invest when He leaves on a long journey. Two of the servants double their talents, and upon His return, the Lord rewards them with praise that all Christians long to hear: ‘Well done good and faithful servant’ (Matthew 25:23).

However, the third servant fears losing His talent, so he buries it. He refuses to take a risk. In response, the Lord takes his talent, hands it over to the more profitable servant—and casts the fearful servant into utter darkness.

Jesus tells us more; ‘No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light’ (Luke 8:16)

God teaches us to step out of our comfort zone and take a risk with the talent He gives us. If we hide it in fear of failure, we dishonor both the Giver and the gift.

Therefore, we walk in faith, multiply His talent, and shine His light for the benefit of others—thereby giving God the glory He deserves.

Call Out To Provocative Performers

I am calling out to stars whose performances are sexually super-charged. When anyone from the press or public dares question their blatantly provocative words, music, or shows, these stars profess to their right to ‘freedom of expression’ and ‘empowerment for women’. They say, ‘it’s my choice,’ or ‘get a life.’

Therefore, I say to them: Your ‘freedom’ spells bondage for millions of girls who follow your lead. When your young fans, the ones who buy your CD’s and watch your videos, copy your lifestyle—they pay a far higher price than CD’s, DVD’s, tickets, clothes, or makeup.

Their price tag for the ‘sexual freedom’ they see in you includes venereal disease, unwanted pregnancy, dropped education, lost dreams, and subjugation to boys and men who couldn’t love them less. Your cheering fans don’t have millions of dollars for medical care, nannies, and a host of paid servants to clean up their broken lives.

You might respond, ‘Raising kids is the parent’s job—not mine.’ However, a lot of parents aren’t on the job, and a lot of kids aren’t listening to them anyway. So, they look up to you. The freedom of expression you flaunt is claiming millions of victims. You discard their innocent love as harshly as the men who step in to finish the job.

The gift of fame bears a great responsibility. To enjoy the fame and ignore the responsibility denies the Source of your gift, God, and the reason for it: to provide a good example for those who follow you.

NBC Dallas prepares story on AMTC

An NBC Dallas reporter, Grant Stinchfield, emailed me on May 6 to say he wanted to do a story on AMTC. He planned to come to an AMTC search in Dallas on Friday, May 14. Yeah! I was excited, because I want the amazing message of AMTC to be known throughout the world. I was told by news experts that Grant is an award-winning investigative reporter, and the best case scenario would be “no story.” In other words, nothing positive could come from a reporter like Grant.

Still, I hoped. Nothing is impossible for God. I knew Grant’s interview of me and his story about AMTC could be a big opportunity to publish our mission to promote good role models and positive programming in the entertainment industry.

On the afternoon of “AMTC’s big break,” thunderstorms closed the Dallas airport and backed up air travel for hours. I sat on the ground in Atlanta ultimately realizing I wouldn’t be there. Grant came anyway, saw the end of the AMTC presentation and interviewed my backup, Drew Matthews.

Drew said Grant was polite, but aggressive. He chose not to interview the attending success stories and seemed to focus on the cost of the AMTC program, as well as the #1 skeptical question, “How many people do you call back?”

When we answer that question honestly by saying, “we call back everyone we think we can help, with goals being more important than talent,” that answer “doesn’t fly” for many people. In a world that’s centered on money, it seems impossible for some to believe that a business can be centered on God and operating in faith. We continue to believe God for the right contestants, the best agents, the big success stories, and the funds to run our company. So far, He’s never disappointed us, and I don’t believe He ever will.

However, with answers like that, it’s like we are speaking Greek… and maybe to many we are. The NBC story should air this week. Whatever it turns out to be, God is stronger than the media. He is our defense, and I believe good will come from Grant’s visit to an AMTC search.

Each individual has a choice about what to hear and who to believe. Even Jesus could not (or did not try) to convince unbelievers. When I became a committed Christian at the age of 51, I turned my life around to walk in a faith I never knew existed. AMTC became His company. I am thankful, and we are hopeful that Grant’s story about AMTC will be a good one!

Tim Urban: David v. Goliath

On March 24, 2010, Tim Urban prevailed. Against a veritable army of 100,000 performers who auditioned, Tim won a spot in the ‘Top Ten’ of the most popular show in the world, American Idol.

Tim’s story reminds me of a young man who became Israel’s greatest king. David was a shepherd boy, but also ‘a skillful musician, a mighty man of valor, a warrior, one prudent in speech, and a handsome man’ (1 Samuel 16:18). David was one of eight children. Tim is one of ten.

David’s first public claim to fame was a big one; he slew a giant named Goliath and led Israel to conquer the mightiest army on earth: the Philistines. When Goliath first saw David, ‘he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, with a handsome appearance’ (1 Samuel 17:42). Goliath taunted David on the battlefield, ‘I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field’ (v.44), but David prevailed. God was on his side.

American Idol is a giant, the highest grossing TV series in entertainment history. This enormous media machine reels in hundreds of millions of viewers.

When Tim moved into the Top 24 through a God-incidental disqualification, he became the judge’s favorite point of ridicule and the media’s biggest target of attack. While fiery darts were hurled with increasing ferocity, fans increasingly cheered for the show’s brave and beautiful underdog.

Through the grace of God, Tim rose to the Top 10, securing a spot on the tour with songs yet to be sung. Tim Urban will lead those watching him in the most positive direction – a path toward God.

Tim is a rising star. Why? Because Tim, like David, is a man after God’s own heart. In earthly terms, Tim has ‘the cool factor.’ In heavenly terms, he has the favor of God. Combine the cool factor and the favor of God and you have an unbeatable combination.

We applaud Tim’s bold courage. By fighting his way into the American Idol Top Ten, Tim slew a giant. God always wins.

(Tim is an AMTC Summer 2009 grad.)

The Heart’s Desire

A recent USA Today article set its focus on the crop of current television shows, noting the proliferation of content not merely suggestive, but downright explicit (and it would seem, unavoidable). Of note were the Caligula-like new series Spartacus on Starz, and the offerings of sexually themed shows on MTV, HBO, FX and even ABC.

In one sense, this is nothing new—that material on TV continues to push the line, or that occasionally the mainstream media will look up to take notice. In another sense, it’s good for those looking to become a part of this industry to understand the forces that drive a phenomenon that is both shocking and unsurprising.

Several times the article’s author Gary Strauss quotes industry professionals who claim the current dinner-plate of salacious and violent content is merely symptomatic of a culture that craves it. One media observer notes TV merely “mirrors life”, while a noted producer says “you have to cut through—you have to get attention.” Another NBC exec managed to tread both sides by offering “we don’t want to be out of touch with the way society is going. At the same time you have to be careful what you put on air.” But perhaps the most telling quote was from an MTV Networks exec who claimed, “you can’t put the genie back in the bottle.”

Far from being fools, these folks are experts on the response of fallen humanity. For while they do not understand the human condition, or do not care to, they do understand the magic formula of appealing to our lowest and basest instincts: it sells. Better yet, the economics of such a trade are routinely couched as being a kind of “evolution” of culture. The choicest irony is the one that claims society is evolving, when in fact so-called “emerging morals” are as old as time itself. The cravings of sinful man and the lust of his eyes will always pay big earthly dividends. We’re just at a place in time where this happens with lightning fast precision.

What’s heartening however, is that while God allows us to have this inherent craving for the world’s desires (via free will), He also gave us a redemptive response, a hard-wired DNA to long after better things, brighter, more beautiful and transcendent things, which ultimatley becomes God Himself. As a writing mentor of mine once said “if you can inspire people to be better than they are, then why don’t you?”

Maybe because it won’t sell, or be as popular?

Therein lies the challenge as entertainers and artists of the Faith. We may inevitably face the charge of deciding on what’s right and good, versus what’s popular. The two, it would seem, are often mortal enemies.

The problem is not that crude, explicit or even dark material waits at our fingertips, it’s the mob of all too willing customers. Therefore, no amount of protest or outrage will change the climate. That “genie” is out. Or to put it another way, taking a bloody steak away from a salivating lion does not stop the lion’s appetite. You must make it want something else. It is the cravings of the heart that are in question. Our challenge is to start by living a life that desires differently. As talent in the faith, I believe it is our call to live a self-examined life that asks: “What am I desiring? What am I craving?”

Thousands of years ago, the prophet Jeremiah wrote: “Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning.” (Jer. 9:5) Sound like a world you know?

But if we, as children of the Light, truly begin to desire, even crave, works of immense quality, beauty and truth that honestly challenge us, we may find a world, weary with its own sin, peering over our shoulders with burning curiosity.

Seek to find the truth, tell the truth and live the truth in all you create, consume, and perform. It might just change the world.

Third Day: No Excuses

I am a big fan of the Christian rock band, Third Day.

Some talented kids from famous families attend AMTC. Recently, a young girl named Scout Powell, daughter of Third Day lead singer Mac Powell, competed as a young actress. Scout did well and received agent callbacks. Generational blessings.

The Powell family is a shining example of God’s goodness, and Mac is a humble leader. He came to the convention for the first day only, as he was leaving to go on tour – but he was kind and gracious to everyone who recognized him. Mac’s wife, Aimee, told me the band had just been nominated for three Grammys.

But they weren’t going to attend the biggest music awards show in the world.

Why not? Third Day had a prior commitment.

When the band learned of its nomination, Mac contacted another hit Christian band to replace Third Day in their previously scheduled engagement. The other band agreed, but the event organizer refused. They wanted Third Day and no one else.

Third Day could easily have made excuses and broken the contract. Goodness knows they had an excellent reason! Instead, they chose to honor their original commitment. How many performers would do the same?

In the parable of the Great Supper (Luke 14:15-24), we see God’s reaction to those who make excuses to Him: anger. It’s easier not to make excuses to God if we choose not to make excuses to anyone else, either. James tells us ‘your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment’ (v. 5:12).

Congratulations to Mac Powell and Third Day. No excuses.

But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

Luke 14:18 NIV

P.S. Maybe God will provide a way for them to attend the Grammy’s after all. Nonetheless, they will surely be rewarded!

The Megan Fox Complaint

I recently received a letter of complaint from a mom who said,

‘I am wondering why you promote yourselves as a Christian Company and have Megan Fox on your Top 100 success stories. I realize she was found by you but she is definitely NOT a Christian role model.’

Indeed, Megan Fox attended AMTC in 2000 at the age of 13. She came with legendary Florida agent Janet Kyle, who said to me, ‘Watch this girl. I think she will become a star.’ Prophetic words.

Megan was voted ‘Sexiest Woman in the World’ for two years running by FHM magazine in 2008-2009. She’s a well-known movie star who has been gracious and appreciative in her public remarks about AMTC.

AMTC did not become a Christian company until 2007. Our previous grads know us as a quality company, but we were not open regarding faith. In fact, I did not truly know God until I became a Christ follower at age 51 and brought AMTC with me. We are a reborn and recommitted company. Megan might think, ‘Uh oh. What’s up with AMTC?’ I hope she may come and see!

We judge no one and pray for everyone – even stars in Hollywood who aren’t ‘starring’ as we would like. I believe Megan and countless others have suffered bad experiences with those calling themselves Christians who are judgmental, arrogant or poor examples of God’s love. Combine disillusionment with the temptations of Hollywood, and perspectives can change.

I am hopeful for Megan.

My vision is for Actors, Models & Talent for Christ to be a beacon of light that attracts and welcomes everyone. I believe AMTC’s mission is from God. We will continue to seek and promote clean beauty and positive entertainment, yet our doors will remain open with lights in the windows for all who want to come in.

‘And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.” ‘

Today’s fashion industry is full of beautiful people all hoping to grace the covers of Vogue and walk the runways of Paris and Milan. But modeling isn’t just wearing beautiful clothes. Modeling is acting; it’s conveying an emotion without saying a word.

Take a look at the pictures surrounding this post. What about these photos stands out to you the most? Is it the designer clothes, beautiful surroundings, great shoes or crazy hats? Could it be the expressions on the models faces? The emotion in their eyes? The graceful way in which they move?

What do you think was happening on set? What inspired these models? Maybe a certain song was blasting out of the studio ipod: what do you think it was?

Yes these are beautiful people, but they are so much more. Do you agree that acting is the foundation of performing?

Happy Birthday Glynis!

Today is my daughter, Glynis’, 28th birthday! Many AMTC Contestants have shot with Glynis, as have many supermodels. She is a daughter of the Most High God, a product of AMTC, and our Artistic Advisor. God creates stars such as Glynis and stars such as you. He is the true Star Maker and ultimate Creative Director. We all work under Him. Sad that so many stars forget where they “star“ted.

‘For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for Him’ (Colossians 1:16). We have only to glimpse at the marvels of this world to know that God is The Most Amazing Artist. It is He Who gives us our talents. They are to be used for His glory and to help others.

When Glynis was a child, she was an artist in the making. Like many children, she and her sister, Lexy (also an artist), would bring me their pictures made with crayons and markers. Like many parents, I proudly displayed them on refrigerators and walls. In fact, many of their ‘early works’ still hang today. Though I was far from a perfect parent, I nurtured their gifts. Therein, they gained confidence and opportunity to grow them.

I salute all parents, spouses and family members who support the talents of their beloved dreamers. Now that my children are adults I see the fruit that grew from watering a young dream. And I say to Glynis and all such artists as she, well done! Well done in the pursuit of your calling. Well done in the courage you show. Well done in reflecting the light given to you by the Father so that others may open their eyes and see.

“Lift up your eyes on high and see Who has created these stars.”

Diversity is important to AMTC. One of the new phrases we use to describe what we do is “The New Face of Hollywood”. By that we mean God will include people in all parts of the world to “sing” their part in His glorious chorus of talent. Just this past year we’ve seen how the Indian people and culture are playing their role. Check out some of AMTC’s past grads and where we see God moving.

Who’s More Famous: Jesus or Paris Hilton?

I am asking a serious question. Since I am in AMTC, a talent development business that launches stars, I wonder. If we asked 100 kids in New York City and 100 more in Bombay, India, what would they answer? I have a bad feeling that they would say, “Paris Hilton.” Why? She is a media celebrity all over the world. Her face and body have splashed more covers and TV tabloid shows than any president. Her image and adventures are absorbed with fascination by hundreds of millions of people. A case could be made for Paris to be the most famous woman in the world today. Think of the number of young girls who watch her and hope to be “like Paris.” She has great influence. They study her. She is their role model.

Jesus Christ was famous in His lifetime, but only in the towns that He traveled in a relatively small area. After His crucifixion, He gradually became famous all over the world, as followers of Christ grew to hundreds of millions. Surely, the Bible is the best read book in the world; nothing compares to it in sales. Even other religions recognize Jesus as a prophet and/or a famous man that changed the world. He still changes the world on a daily basis, but not enough people talk about it or Him. Christians, including me, call Him the King of Kings, though He has many titles. We study Him. He is our role model. In truth, we hope to be just like Him.

Still, we live in the world, and media celebrities are a fact of life. Yet, they are not a truth of life. Therefore, I propose that performers of light, truth, talent, and beauty fight hard for the roles and lives that need to be won. I propose that models, actors, singers, dancers and comedians who love God practice their hardest, join the entertainment game, step up the plate, compete with the best in the world, hit home runs, and become stars. God will help you. He is the umpire, and He cannot be pleased with the players. By getting in the game, you will give kids today better choices about Who to cheer for and Who to copy. Can they follow you who follow Jesus, or can they follow Paris who follows… God knows what. I will not hazard a guess, but the consequences of her celebrity status are far reaching.

Jesus is The Superstar, but only you can make Him more famous than Paris. Until He comes back for a personal appearance, you are His stand-ins.

The Talent Temptation

And no man taketh this honor unto himself, but that he is called of God… (Hebrews 5:4 KJV)

Oh, how tempting it is for us to forget from Whom our talent came. God gives each of His children gifts. Some of His gifts are more easily seen than others. Beauty, voice, charisma, dance, or athleticism are magnetic gifts. They move other people to look, admire, and be drawn to those performers who show them. A great gift can become a great temptation.

Therefore, performers are tempted by the world, and the world is currently controlled by dark forces. Honors befall the bearers of such talents beginning in early childhood. Well meaning passers by will comment, ‘How beautiful, he or she should be a model,’ or ‘Wow, what a voice,’ or ‘You should get that child on a stage.’ Compliments continue as talented children grow.

Home coming queens, cheerleaders, athletes, dance stars, actors, and soloists are applauded in school, church, competitions, and communities. Some rise to become stars. Honors and accolades are frequent. Their recipients are tempted toward narcissism and popularity, or by rewards, benefits, and beliefs that their lovely gifts are self-created and totally deserved.

Therefore, should Christian parents hide or ignore such gifts? Certainly not! They are given by God for His purpose. Instead, they should shower their children with Godly counsel, words, fellowship, and service. Nurture their gifts, and dress them with humility until they can dress themselves. Therewith, they withstand the Talent Temptation and bring admiring glances to the God they serve, for such is the purpose of talent.

Supermodel Bible Study

And your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, because the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign Lord. (Ezekiel 16:14 NIV)

God made certain of His children to be especially beautiful in the eyes of the world. Their faces, figures, and voices are striking. Others look at them and say, ‘Wow!’ We call them movie stars, singers and models. We love to look at them, hear them, and read about them. We are fascinated by every aspect of their lives- public and private.

God gave them a gift for a specific purpose, but that same gift can become a curse when they forget the One who created it, the One who created them, and they begin to glorify themselves. Without Godly humility and counsel, the enemy will become active in their lives. He will surround them with temptations, as others try to elevate them to the level of an idol. They have groupies, fan clubs, and thousands to millions who adore them. Thus is Hollywood today, or the majority of its stars.

Many believe that their talent, beauty, and fortunes come from their own hard work, perseverance, or from ‘luck.’ They can become puffed up, made up, drugged up, surgically altered, and mentally impaired. They are falling stars. When God made certain people to stand out, He made them to stand out for Him- to reflect His glory. He gave them their gifts to magnify Him, not them. When adoring fans see them, they see Christ. They bow in humility and appreciation to the Father, and they lead their fans to the Son. These are God’s supermodels. They are true stars.

Call Out To Dateline NBC

Dear Dateline Correspondent, Chris Hansen:

I appreciate your efforts to warn naive consumers about modeling scams and clean up the talent development industry. We have been trying to do the same thing for the last 27 years. I am the CSO of the Actors, Models & Talent Competition, better known as AMTC. We also have a scholarship division called Project Dream Repair.

You have rightfully reported on what is bad in the industry. I invite you to see what is good! AMTC has been “fighting the good fight” for many years. We are a 3 generation family business started by my mother, Millie Lewis, who was a NY model in the late 1940’s. If you take a look at our website, you can see some of our successes, industry experts who support us, and who we are.

If you or any member of your team would like to investigate or attend AMTC, you would be welcome. Everything we do would be open to you: our auditions, training, VIP’s, success stories, graduates, fees- whatever you would like to see. I hate dream stealers. Truly hate them. Yet, in a sense, you are stealing dreams as well, by providing only part of a story. There is another part, and it is the good part.

Please come and see AMTC for yourself. I don’t know if you will find much scandal, unless you think AMTC being a publicly Christian company is controversial, but I believe you will find warmth, drama, hope, real families with talent and dreams, and unlikely people who went on to become stars. Everyone loves an underdog. In this dirty industry, we are an underdog. Kind of like a David and Goliath story.

Come and meet us.

Sincerely,

Carey Arban

Christians in the Talent Industry

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”

How shall the stars and star makers in film, TV, theatre, dance, fashion, or music be saved? How can they call on the name of Jesus when they do not know Him? When they have not heard of Him? When they have not seen Him? You are His body. You are His voice. You are the preacher!

What are we thinking when we hide our talent in the church? In the home? In the neighborhood? We are thinking of ourselves. We are staying safe. We are staying put. We are not walking and talking for God.

AMTC has a great commission. We are the senders; “And how shall they preach, except they be sent?” AMTC is a vehicle to get you where you need to go. AMTC is a teacher to make you industry ready. AMTC is a bridge to bring talent of God to the world.

And you? You are God’s beautiful feet, faces, and voices. You are His witness. You are His joy, talent, and light that will bring curious glances at every audition and every job. When someone asks, “What is the reason for the hope that is in you?” (Read 1 Peter 3:15) You have an answer. You have a great commission.

John Sierra’s Journey of Faith through AMTC

“Christ’s might does not lie in making a believer and then leaving him to shift for himself; but He who begins the good work carries it on; He who imparts the first germ of life in the dead soul, prolongs the divine existence, and strengthens it until it bursts asunder every bond of sin, and the soul leaps from earth, perfect in glory.”
-Charles Spurgeon

My brother just recently posted a wonderful note…which inspired me to write one as well. If any of you are reading this…I thank you, and ask you to bear with me as you read this. It may be lengthy in some parts, but I hope this may encourage you. I am learning new things each day about Christ, and His love. His grace goes beyond anything that I can do. His love truly has no bounds.

Many of you know that recently, I attended AMTC (most of you tagged where there with me!), a competition down in Florida. God has used that competition to shape my heart in new ways. He has opened some incredible doors; He used the staff and people at this competition to grant me, once again, a precious hope found only in Him…only in heaven.
My journey begins a bit before this competition. I ask that you take this ride with me. Perhaps, together, we might even now learn new things of the Love of Jesus Christ for us, His people.

It starts about a year ago, on a dark, rainy night in the cool of winter. I had been going through a bit of a hard time…moments that I felt alone, that no one was there for me. Life had become dull, unsatisfying, and full of hurt. Those who I had cared about most, had hurt me the most. It drove me to curl up inside of myself…to build walls, and lock people out. It climaxed on this one rainy night, as I was approaching an intersection. I remember hearing a voice…not loud…almost a whisper in my ear say to me, “You know…death is like going to sleep. Just close your eyes and drive…it will be all over before you know it.” It sounded so sweet to me due to the setting that my story had placed me in. And I listened. I closed my eyes and continued to drive toward that intersection.

Yet, I heard another voice after the first. Just as quiet…but it was sweet. It was one full of love…with a quiet pleading. It was calm, peaceful. Like jumping into a refreshingly cool pool of water, in the middle of a hot, dry summer’s day. He said, “Open your eyes. I love you, son. I have a plan for you. I will carry you.” A moment of eternity passed, or so it seemed, and I opened my eyes. Life flooded back into my veins, and my walls crumbled. I had heard the voice of my God who DID in fact care whether I lived or died.

Fast forward to this past summer (2008). For a period of 3-4 months, I sunk into a terrible depression. Once again, walls shot up. I felt I was spiraling downward, to who knows where. The voice of my God seemed to disappear…I shut myself off from all who cared about me. Friends would call, would pour into me, but none of it helped. Almost every night I ended up in some random parking lot, on top of my car, with my guitar, notebook, and pain. I would disappear for two, three hours at a time, and just cry. I felt so alone. I knew God was listening, but I needed Him to come to me, to rescue me. I didn’t allow myself to see it, but He was trying to show me He was there all the while. Through the calls of those who cared for me. Through my parents. Through His word. Through AMTC. (For, I auditioned for AMTC about this same time). These feelings, this pain, came to the worst point while sitting beside a lake in the middle of a thunderstorm. Some would call me stupid, but when life has no meaning, and you pray that you are struck and killed by lightning, reason and logic go out the door. I remember staring into that rainy, dark sky, occasionally lit by streaks of purples and bright whites, banging on my guitar, yelling at God that He didn’t exist…that if He did He would heal my heart. Immediately after this confession, I thought of a life where He did not exist. I thought about how close that lightning was, and how close I was to death, and if He wasn’t real, death was nothing. I began to whisper, as tears poured from my eyes, “please exist…please exist.”

Shortly thereafter, my pastor and I talked, and both agreed that at this point of my life, God was calling me in a different direction (if you don’t know, I was on staff at my church as the Jr. High Pastor for 2 years) He most certainly is/was…although, I was extremely scared of the idea of not knowing what to do, or where to go. I freaked out! I remember my pastor telling me of faith…that it is scary and it is one step at a time. Praise be to God, the depression left after that. However, I sunk to a different depth. One of apathy. I ended up confessing to Ms. Shakia Spears at an AMTC meeting that I hadn’t been diligent in ANYTHING. I played video games and watched TV everyday. I gave up on my dreams, desires, hopes…I cared about NOTHING. I just went through the motions. AMTC wasn’t even a remote reality in my head…so, I didn’t practice. I have a brother, named Seth Davey (well, a friend, that is a brother), and God used Him to encourage me in this other, more recent, dark time. He would always tell me to start to read, for it would open my eyes to new things. I never listened…just kinda went “yeah, yeah.” Well, for some reason (it was God), I began to read. I began to soak up the words of these authors, whom God has chosen to use in my heart, to ignite a small flame, that would grow into a raging fire through His word, and through AMTC. Hope/diligence was ignited at the competition. God opened amazing doors, none of which I deserved. He sat me across from men like Blaine Barcus (The Vice President of A & R with Sony BMG’s Provident Label), with AJ, the lead guitarist from Nevertheless, gave me the amazing opportunity to audition for 20th Century Fox, and the list goes on. All of this, gave me a hope that had died long ago. A realization of what my purpose is…and that hard work will be apart of what it is that God is calling me to. (Which, I don’t know exactly where that will be…but it’s cool. I’m gonna work my tail off in the meantime!)

The last day of AMTC, I got up and attended the devotional service, at which, Ms. Stephanie Duke spoke of returning to Christ…who desires us to return to Him. I remember having to fight NOT to flood out the place with tears…because I knew it was true. Christ’s love goes beyond anything we can do…say…or have had done to us.

Following AMTC, God blessed me with the humbling opportunity of sharing His love with a brother that I met at the competition. The whole entire situation was a God thing. His life had been filled with numerous evils. He told me that he just wanted to be loved, by anyone that would do so. I shared with Him the love of Jesus Christ. How Christ did not come to condemn the world, but to save it (John 3:16-17). He came to rescue us from the prison that we are born into. The same God that spoke those words of love to my heart the night of my contemplated suicide, is the same God who came to this earth to give His life so that we might be reunited with His love. He desires to satisfy our hearts…to heal the pain that this world has given us so much of. He wants to give you…us….the world….the lives that we never had.

I thank Jesus for His love that pushes through my walls, through my failures, through my pain, hurt, and insecurities. I pray that we all beg of Him for more of His love. For this is what will change your life. His love is what will fill the emptiness that exists in our hearts. He will be what gives you your heart back.

He will be the One who restores the life that was taken from you so long ago.

“Our God is mighty to save.”
In the arms of Grace,

The Callback List

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began… (2 Timothy 1:9 KJV)

January 4 was callback day for AMTC Winter 2009. Contestants worked for many months to prepare their talent. Some worked for many years. Indeed, they are “prisoners of hope.” Our VIP Guests issued their callback lists at AMTC, and hopeful contestants waited in eager anticipation to see on which lists their name may be written. Jesus came to deliver God’s prisoners of hope, and He will not disappoint you. Yet, the world might.

Still, God loves His children in the here and now- not just in heaven. He delights in our joy. For those AMTC contestants who are following a calling God put on their lives, He will not disappoint you. While we may wish the fulfillment of our dreams today, right now, only God knows the right timing. According to His own purpose and grace, your calling will be perfectly fulfilled. God will surely reward your leap of faith.

As we proceed from January into February, AMTC is now in auditions all over the country. Bright-eyed families come to see who we are and where they might fit into the entertainment industry. They put their talent on the line. AMTC Audition Teams must also issue callbacks. During that first crucial look, callbacks are based on our quick glimpse of your intelligence, goals, attitude, and ability. We do our best to choose those we believe are most ready for the AMTC experience. We are good at our jobs, but we are not perfect.

Yet, there is One who is perfect: God, and He surely wants you on His callback list. It the list that matters the most. When you are following God, He will make sure that the right doors open for you to multiply the talents He gave you!

AMTC Bible Study?

I began sending out an AMTC Bible Study and Daily Devotionals in May, 2008. I believe the Holy Spirit asked me to do so. Background: I became a committed Christian relatively late in life, or so I thought two years ago at the age of 51. I know now God’s timing is perfect. He had a plan for me and AMTC.

For me, I needed God and circumstances to wrestle me to the ground, so that I could look up. I have a lot of fortitude, and giving up to God took a while. As the owner of a successful small company, I thought I was “master of my own universe.” Ha! God cleansed me of that notion. He corrected me, and I am grateful.

From an AMTC point of view, being an ethical, caring, quietly Christian company allowed us to establish good alliances in the talent world. We grew deep roots in our first 24 years, and AMTC formed bonds with some of the world’s best agents, managers, casting directors, and professionals. These VIP’s give our AMTC Grads a great platform to learn, and for those most ready, to launch a career.

So, who am I to write a daily devotional? A good question! I thank God that He gave me gifts to read, analyze, and write. They showed up early in school, and now I can put them to the best possible use. God graced me to learn His Word quickly, though I have a lifetime left to study. I also wanted to make up for lost time with my own children, who were not raised as committed Christians. Surely, AMTC has nurtured many such children, and to them, I want to cast a few words of God- to tempt them rightly, to teach them surely, and to encourage them to read the Bible.

If you would like to be included in AMTC’s daily Bible study, please email me. I will place your email on our list. Some of the devotions pertain specifically to the talent world. Others reflect upon the treasure of lessons in God’s Book: practical life lessons with perfect wisdom. Our AMTC Bible Studies are sent via Constant Contact, a secure web company. You can forward them to others, or opt out at any time.

Finally, I would like to thank you for loving and supporting AMTC. I stand firm in our company’s first goal, which is to honor God. Our second goal is to honor the hopes and dreams of our contestants through excellent education, an event that exceeds expectations, and an unparalleled opportunity. Our final goal is to honor our team of employees, professionals, and coaches– to run an effective and ethical company.

In the process of AMTC, we launch stars who cast God’s light upon the world. Isn’t that our great commission? We are thankful!

Prayer Begins With Thanksgiving

AMTC Daily Devotional, November 25, 2008

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts
with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. (Psalm 100:4 KJV)

How blessed are we to be able to speak to God in prayer? After all, God is the master of the universe, the creator of heaven and earth. He is all-knowing and all-powerful. How blessed are we that He listens and answers? Wow!

What’s the proper way to speak with God? The Bible tells us that we should enter God’s court with thanksgiving. We should not walk into His presence with a complaint on our lips. That’s not courteous even among people, and we’re talking about God!

Therefore, begin all prayers with thanksgiving and praise. Tell God that you value your life. You appreciate your blessings. Tell Him that you believe Him. Tell Him that you have faith in His word. Even your challenges will work out for your benefit. Then, tell Him your mistakes, your concerns, your requests. He’s listening, and He promises to act on each one.

Finish your prayer the same way you began it- with thanksgiving! Bless His glorious and powerful name. Thus, you bless yourself!

AMTC’s Christian Values Attacked As It Is Shut Out of Europe by Lynne Millar

AMTC Europe was shut out of the soon-to-be Paris Convention by Lynne Millar, former licensee of the AMTC Europe name. Ms. Millar forced AMTC out of the management of the November event by the consistent withholding of all information and funds necessary for the experienced American team to run it. We could not lift the veil of secrecy from this office, nor from two trips to Europe. Therefore, AMTC had to withdraw Ms. Millar’s license. Following AMTC’s public announcement, Ms. Millar made one of her own.

The announcements of AMTC’s withdrawal of its name and team and Ms. Millar’s alliance with International Talent Showcase (below) both occurred on October 24. Families in the U.K. and Ireland are now faced with confusion and unfamiliar choices. They are being given conflicting accounts from the U.S. office and from Ms. Millar.

How does AMTC’s Christian faith fit into the picture? AMTC’s Christian values are at the center of the conflict, as is evidenced by Ms. Millar’s email below. (Scroll down) God is at the center of AMTC. Christians know what that means. Yet, AMTC welcomes all faiths and all people of good intention.

What does “God is at the center of AMTC” mean to non-Christians? It means Christian values are our core, our goal, and our destination. We are not perfect as people, nor as a company, but we aim for excellence. Christian values are not exclusive to Christians. They are shared by all faiths and people of good conscience; they include truth, patience, kindness, excellence, compassion, humility, and love– loving God and our fellow men more than anything else. We believe these are good values in business.

Does AMTC force Christianity on non-believers? Of course not! Neither did Jesus. Do we look down upon those different from us? No! Neither did Jesus. He loved everyone. He still does. We treat everyone at AMTC with courtesy and respect.

So, what should the good families in the U.K. and Ireland do? They should pray. They should study what is now being presented to them. They should make certain that Lynne Millar’s event will have a sufficient quantity and quality of agents, managers, and casting directors in attendance. If so, they may choose to continue to Paris. Meeting excellent VIP’s in an uplifting environment is a great opportunity, regardless of who is organizing it.

What can AMTC do? We are trying to do the right thing. We are trying to do everything we can. AMTC never collected any fees or funds from Ms. Millar- not for the license and not from contestants. We are not a cash-rich organization. We are a three-generation small family business with an international outreach.

We will offer British and Irish contestants who choose not to attend International Talent Showcase the opportunity to come to AMTC for either of the 2009 events on full scholarship, excluding travel, food, and hotel. We will also send in coach(es) from the U.S. if we have 10 or more contestants wishing to come to either event. This statement has been amended. Please see the bottom of this blog

As a committed Christian, I trust God. I trust that the truth will become known. Until that time, faith is required. Personally, I believe the worst choice for families is to give up. I believe that the good families from Europe with talented contestants will have a good outcome from this challenging situation. We are here. We will help.

If you would like to read AMTC’s two public emails on the reasons for the disassociation of AMTC and Lynne Millar, as well as myths, truth, and advice to the European Contestants, please email Jen Harris.

If anyone (especially from Europe) would like to discuss this challenging situation, please email Carey Arban or telephone my son-in-law, Adam She, who is our Director of Operations at the AMTC office in Atlanta at 678-783-0500.

Dear Contestants,

We are thrilled & excited to announce to you we have merged with the International Talent Showcase who are the World’s Leading Events Organisers.

There has been numerous operational difficulties & my promise to keep Christianity away from the event was being over ruled & our contestants would have been preached to to promote Carey’s Christian belief’s.

International Talent Showcase are the leading events organisers in the World their CEO Sharon will be happy to answer any questions you may have : sharon@internationaltalentshowcase.com, 001 401-431-6610

We have a fantastic list of VIP’s for you & we are looking forward to the event.

Yours with love,

Lynne Millar,

AMTC’s Additional Statement of October 28, 2008

In addition to offering a scholarshipped AMTC for anyone who does NOT attend the Paris Convention, AMTC will offer a scholarship for anyone who DOES attend and was disappointed in it.

In the potentiality that Ms. Millar cancels the event altogether, we will come to the U.K. and host an AMTC showcase, at no charge to the participants. It won’t be as long as AMTC, but it will be good. We will need help on the U.K. end with details and space, but I know that will be provided. I am confident that all will work out well in any case scenario. We must keep our eyes open, and we must keep our faith- especially when it is challenged.

AMTC Europe loses AMTC Affiliation

We are sorry that AMTC Europe has lost the AMTC name and affiliation. Lynne Millar, event owner, did not fulfill the vital terms of the licensing agreement designed to maintain AMTC standards and protocols. AMTC’s standards are exacting and cannot be compromised. To our best knowledge, Ms. Millar intends to carry forward with the November event under her own creative control. We hope the best success for those attending the Paris convention, but AMTC will not be producing it. If you have questions regarding details of the event, please contact Ms. Millar directly.

Although we did not receive any contestant funds, we care deeply for each contestant’s welfare. The hopes and dreams of the talented U.K. families are important to God, and they are important to us. We would like to hear from the U.K. contestants, if you or they have any questions or concerns which we at AMTC may answer. Our doors are open to you, and we will assist you in any way possible.

If you would like extended details on our disassociation with Lynne Millar, please email Jen Harris, Jen@amtcworld.com or Adam She,

How Talent Glorifies God!

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit: so that ye shall be my disciples. (John 15:8 KJV)

In Jesus’ own words, we are told to bear much fruit. What type of fruit? Our fruit differs with the gifts that God put inside each one of us. God loves diversity; therefore, He gave us a diversity of gifts. Within AMTC, we see abundant talent. God put a calling within exceptional individuals of all ages to perform: to act, sing, dance or model. Why? To glorify Him with their talents. To bring light into a dark industry. To move others toward Him. God gave stars charisma. We see it on TV, in the movies, on the stage, and in beautiful models. Stars fascinate us. God has a purpose in it, but the purpose can be perverted. Dark forces tempt today’s vulnerable celebrities toward money, power, pride, vanity, and a misuse of their gifts.

What is AMTC’s role? To launch new stars with a passion for God- stars who will set good examples- stars who will shine a divine light to inspire others! When talented individuals deny their gifts, when parents don’t allow their children to perform, frustration sets in. It will only be lifted by following their calling. Tens of thousands of Christian families have held their young performers back, fearing the effects of a dark industry. I believe these parents must root their children in the Word, trust God, and allow them to pursue the calling God put in their hearts!

Glynis Arban’s Show Package for Marilyn- Ethereal!

I am Glynis Arban’s Mom! So, I am far from impartial. Yet, it’s great to see Millie Lewis’s granddaughter living and thriving in the New York modeling scene six decades after her grandmother’s own career there. However, Glynis is behind the camera- not in front. Still, I remember a small sterling silver teaspoon given as a birth gift from Eileen Ford to Glynis in 1982; the card read, “I look forward to you working with Ford one day.” That card become prophetic as 2008 opened with Glynis shooting the Ford Supermodel of the World competition.

Glynis recently shot and published the Show Package for the Marilyn Agency, one of the top fashion agencies in the world. The models are incredible, of course. The photos speak for themselves. I am attaching several reviews of the package, and, like many women, it’s a great adventure for me to see what the top fashion designers, agents, artists and models present to the world twice a year!

Glynis’s Website

Reviews of the Marilyn Agency Show Package

New York Post Fashion Week by Danica Low “Throughout the week, I’ll be posting my favorites. Let’s start with Marilyn Agency’s ethereal pastel pastiche…”

Models.com “Marilyn hits the SS 09 show market with what just might be its best show package ever. A delicate and ethereal suite of original photographs by Glynis Selina Arban, commissioned exclusively for the package, highlights each girl in gorgeously wistful colors. The feeling is painterly, romantic and note perfect for Spring.”

COACD or Confessions of a Casting Director “WOW, a show package from Marilyn. (COACD) Loves it…”

The Imagist “The Marilyn package blew my socks off because there was an attempt to resonate an idea of Spring: soft colors, a spirit of feminine abstraction and a clever visual rendition that made the girls resemble flowers. Glynis Selina Arban, the photographer of that package, as they say, truly turned it.”

The World’s Loss of Shelby Allegood

AMTC Regional Director and Owner of Touch of Class, Shelby Allegood, passed away on July 28, 2008, following surgery for intestinal complications. Shelby loved the fashion, modeling, and talent industries, and she loved her students! Her family has suffered a great loss. So have we all. The world has lost a touch of class, but the world’s loss is God’s gain. It’s Shelby’s gain as well. Shelby’s Touch of Class is now another touch of class in heaven. We respect of her contributions to our industry, and we mourn her loss.

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

Shelby left a great inheritance to her family. She left a great inheritance to thousands of students and friends over many years. She built up a Holy Spirit treasure chest, and she passed it along. We all hope for a similar outcome!

What’s AMTC really like- Macey’s Story

After the show, Stephanie, our director, told us she would meet us around 9pm to “wait on callbacks”….(After all the competitions are over, the agents/managers/casting directors give lists to the AMTC staff, and they print letters with a copy of each contestants callback on it…) I took the kids on back to the room to get in bed, and James waited with our group, Direct Knoxville, for our callbacks…..One of the teens, Josh, has been doing a Bible Study each night, and James attended this…..well, 10 pm, 11pm, 12 midnight….James came back to the room, and said it would be around 1 before Steph had the callbacks in hand, so he came to the room for an hour….(we could have waited until 8am to get them…but we were too excited…and wanted to know….) So, finally around 1:40 he came back to the room with a letter folded up in his hand..with Macey’s name on it….Steph had requested no one in our group talk about callbacks to each other, and that no one read them until they got back into their room….To prevent anyone from getting hurt feelings, ect….Well, we opened the letter to see that Macey had received 3 callbacks….two agents from New York, and one from Los Angeles…..We were ecstatic…We were going into this with the attitude that she wouldn’t get any…so to get 3 was awesome….Sleep was hard to come by…and finally around 2:30 we fell asleep…..

“How is everything going? I’m really bad at keeping in touch, but please know that I have been praying for you and am so proud to be a part of Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ! Yes! It’s so awesome to know that there are Christians in the industry that know that their work and beauty is purposed to glorify God. We are the Esthers and Davids of the world and as long we continue to put God first and use what He has given us externally to show the light that is in us through Christ our work here will be fulfilled!

Anywho, seminary is awesome awesome AWESOME! I have gone into full-time ministry at an incredible church to 10,000 people! I am the Director/ Youth Minister of the R.I.P. the Runway Young Women’s Ministry and am now teaching 200 girls twice a month! It has been absolutely breathtaking to see how God has used my experiences in the industry to theme and run a ministry teaching teenage girls that they are God’s Couture and they can be fashion forward and “cool” and be a strong Christian young women…. all the while walking it out for His purposes! Words cannot express how incredible this journey has been.

I am finally attaching photos from my years in the business. Clearly some of them were before I turned to ministry, but I wanted to give them to you anyway. I actually will be in Pageantry Magazine sometime soon (I don’t even know) for a gown designer, and I am shooting a cosmetics campaign. :o) Little jobs here and there.
How Can a Christian Rapper Get Started?

Meet Ashley “Rayne” Moore

One AMTC Contestant’s Story!

“I met Ian Burke at the 2008 Winter AMTC Convention. I had completely bombed my one opportunity during the talent competition, and I needed a miracle. When the time came for speed networking, my agent, Marion Webb of Marion Model & Talent Agency (M.M.T. Agency), handed me my envelope and enclosed was a list full of agents that I could meet with in the given time frame, but she had only one name highlighted for me to see, Ian Burke of Launch Pad Entertainment. When I got to his booth and told him that I was a Christian rapper, his first response was, “What makes you think that I am interested in a Christian rapper?”

I told him that I assumed he was interested due to the fact that on the speed networking sheet, his interest read “…gospel singers and rappers” along with some others. However, I did not know that the two were totally separate. I played a little of one of my songs for him, and he said he would listen to the rest when he got back to his office in Atlanta. I sent him a message on myspace a few weeks later asking him what he thought of it, and he replied that he love my music. He just needed to know what he was going to do with me. So, I told him to call me. When he called, he told me that he liked my style and that it sounded better than most Christian rappers that he had heard. After a month or so, I had a meeting with Ian at his Drift City Records office. At the beginning of the meeting, I was completely lost. I had no idea as to how to answer any questions that he threw at me. He was up front and very honest, however. He said that I was a double negative, one I am a Chrisian rapper and two I am a female, neither of which sell that often on the Hip Hop charts.

I told him that I had a different sound that the world needed to hear and that I would not compromise. He said that he was not asking me to compromise. He said that he was interested in making money, his relationship with God was between him and God. I made it clear that my heart was focused on saving lives and making a difference. I respected his position and insight and he respected mine. Afterwards, he had me perform for him. After I finished, he asked me one simple question, “Are you willing to allow me to do whatever it takes to get you out there as long as I don’t cause you to have to compromise your values, beliefs, or morals?” With the favor of God on my side and God’s plan for my life in my heart, I gladly answered, ‘YES!’ “ To hear Rayne’s Music, visit Rayne’s myspace page

Taking Scholarships to a Whole New Level

AMTC believes that anyone with a true calling to perform – whether it’s acting, modeling, singing, or dancing – should have the opportunity to pursue his or her dream. When we started the Insider Club Scholarship, we set out to award one scholarship each month to a deserving individual. And while it’s been fun and we’ve had some very talented people receive scholarships, it’s not enough.

So, as of May 31, 2008, the Insider Scholarship will be no more. Instead, we’re going to take scholarships to a higher level. Project Dream Repair (or PDR) is the “vehicle” AMTC uses for charitable outreach. Check it out for yourself!

We’re believing there are people out there who possess the passion, calling, and gift to perform, but need some help along the way. And we’re here to help you see if you have what it takes to follow your dream.

Thank you, Insiders, for your essays and emails. We’ve enjoyed reading them and getting to know you better.

The Industry: A Mom’s Perspective & Son’s Journey

Note from AMTC Staff- This letter was so moving & full of great advice, we could not put it in the reading room alone. Instead, this is an active blog where any questions or comments you have will be forwarded to & answered by Mrs. Showalter.

This is a VERY late, and hopefully helpful letter to all the parents out there who are considering AMTC:

First and foremost, I am so very proud that Steven got his start with a Christian based competition!!! This business is tough. At AMTC, friends and camaraderie surrounded him- that I know he could not have gotten anywhere else. He got TRUTH, and was protected, he learned and excelled. What a privilege to meet all the wonderful agents, managers and guests that AMTC had in store for him. With HALO as his Mother agent, he got superior training from a loving, firm, experienced, knowledgeable, and Christian source in Stephanie Duke. When he got on the stage at AMTC, he did so prepared with poise, and prayers. He did great with the confidence she helped instill in him! He met many other wonderful directors that he also learned from, once at AMTC. As a parent, we have loved getting to know the AMTC family and appreciate all the support you have continued to be in Steven’s career.

Also as a Mom, I have a lot of advice for other parents. Sometimes, I almost think, I might really “know” this business. Oh, how we all want to be an expert! LOL, but truly every time I think I have learned a lot about this business, I learn something else!! How ever changing it can be, but some things are constant:

*One of the things I have learned and in my mind the MOST important, is HOW important it is to make sure your child realizes that his or her value is NOT in talent or looks or voice. It is in the fact that they are children of God, and their worth is so valuable to Him that He sent His only Son to pay the price for their mistakes, their sins. Without God, our self imposed worth is simply temporal, but with God our worth is ETERNAL, no matter how successful we are or are not on this earthly stay.

Parents please above all, LOVE your children. It breaks my heart to see some parents convince their child that they have to perform or look a certain way to be accepted. We are all accepted by the heavenly Father; we just have to ask! SadIy I have seen in more than one waiting room as Steven was on auditions, some sad examples of “stage” Moms and Dads. How sad to see children literally RUN out of an audition … in tears!!! Even worse to hear a parent yelling at a child just outside the door!

*Make sure parents understand … if your child is not tough, and able to handle rejection, don’t put him through this…. If we didn’t believe in Steven’s GOD given talent and looks, and I repeat, GOD GIVEN, and that God is going to USE Steven in something to glorify the Lord, we would have easily stopped by now… I can’t tell you how many times I have had to be a cheerleader when he came out of an audition, when inside it was breaking my heart that they just didn’t see my “perfect” child as the one for the part. Mom, be prepared to have a good game face, and a strong pair of kneepads, because when they leave as Steven has, to travel half way around the world, you are gonna be on your knees praying a lot! It is tough to see him get on a plane to NY, or Korea, or Japan, etc.! I am still developing a tougher “hide.”

*Another issue is financial, remember, PRAY about how to manage your child’s business. I cannot stress enough, how important it is to have some money backing you in this business. I really believe, if Mike and I had more money to back him while he started, he would have already landed something big in Hollywood on film or TV. We have learned that the huge expenses it takes to start up in this business are very prohibitive for a middle-income family like ours (especially with a Mom now on disability). But I don’t think it is wise or good to go borrow money to get your child into this business, and that is pretty bottom line biblical. God I believe will honor not putting the family in debt, and Steven is appreciating more and more, as he is learning and earning!

*Finally, a VERY important point … that we were told at AMTC, but I am just not sure is sunk in completely…...In fact I know it didn’t…Please, PLEASE tell all the parents out there, THIS IS NOT AN OVERNIGHT BUSINESS… Steven has had continual work since he started. He had a lot of callbacks, and he was off to NY for an audition for “All of my Children” immediately after AMTC. He started out with a bang and hasn’t stopped yet.

Some of the agencies he has been or is currently signed with are: Halo Talent, Elite Atlanta, Elite Chicago, Hotshots Kids, JPervis Talent agency, OSBRINK- LA, NY models, the W agency in Seoul, Korea, The Cosmopolitan Agency in Osaka, Japan, and has verbal agreements with several others that become signed when he is in those states. ... Sounds great right?

BUT- the expenses to pay: gas for castings, return call backs and jobs, comp cards, head shots, resumes, photo shoots for comp cards, clothes for the model bag, makeup (yes even for boys), hair stylings, gas for all of that, parking, airline tickets, hotels, restaurants, living expense, his apartments overseas, interpreters, taxies, renting a car, transportation, chauffers, acting classes, private acting coaching, living expenses for other states, and a car for L.A., (as he is not old enough to lease or rent a car without me!!!) Food, passport fees, insurance for another state, website ads, every agency charges for web profiles-yearly, and we have not even gotten into the SAG and other union dues yet!!!

All that takes time and money. Steven is working also at Aeropostal along with the modeling to help pay expenses so he can continue saving for L.A. How blessed are the families who have the money, or the opportunity to just move their family out there, but even they have challenges!

*Now, on another side, Steven CHOSE to finish High school here in GA. and in doing so, got some great opportunities and training in both Black Box Theater and stage presentations. Grayson High has a very high tech drama department, and Steven starred or directed in about every performance his senior year, in both State competition plays and musicals. He got to go to his HS proms, and activities, and he has great memories to pull from for acting from those. We believe he chose wisely. Steven also did some heart felt praying and true investigation about moving before graduation. He decided it would be good to “finish” being a kid”... and we are glad he did. He also found he was that age, that the directors would choose and older guy over him if they could. He is blessed that he LOOKS at age 19 like a 16 yr. old most of the time. This will help him in LA, because he realized that for every job he went up for that had a 19 yr. old that was out of school- that the directors preferred them, due to not having to deal with on set teachers etc. His call back from the director in Louisiana was a truly interested director, but an older kid that LOOKED younger got the job. So parents of almost legal or almost graduated kids, think hard about moving your child out of school. Every agent we have been in contact with has stressed EDUCATION first!

As much as possible, even before he was legal age, we have tried to make sure the decisions in this business were Steven’s wishes. Discuss things even with a younger child; make sure this is what he or she wants to do… Not your dream that didn’t quite make it.

*To Summarize all that last part, even though Steven started out with all the interest, and all the call backs, He has not made the move because of money… So, all that said, I really encourage parents to be aware, unless you have a bank roll, a rich auntie, or are rich yourself, don’t feel bad if your child isn’t able to participate in everything right away. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE INVESTMENT that doesn’t happen overnight!

Investigate and move forward with knowledge. LISTEN at the AMTC seminars and take NOTES!! AMTC is the best teacher and tool we have had!

Now days, We are looking at it as Steven is earning his dues, and truly learning. He is getting stronger through the process, and growing wiser. Being patient has been hard, but the Lord is teaching us all through it. In appearance of all the great successes he has had, you would think he has a lot of money, but the cost so far is just starting to break even! With us entering our 4th year since he started, wow, hard to believe, it has been a great ride, but not financially strong yet. But the perks are neat so they must be considered. Think about it?

HOW many 19 year olds get to travel the world and see it’s many wonders!

The best thing for us though is STEVEN LOVES what he is doing, and that said, IF for some reason he didn’t “make” it in Hollywood, he wants to be a Drama teacher.

As for me, I happen to believe with ALL MY HEART, more now than even when he went to AMTC in 2004, that God has gifted Steven with his talents and looks for a reason, and that Steven is going to be successful in Film and or TV, etc., to the Glory of our Lord! Steven loves people, and he Loves God, I know he loves to introduce people to God… I continue to stand on, “it will be wonderful to see what God does with Steven!!!” I MISS him terribly while he is gone for months at the time modeling and living in a different country, but I am so proud of him, and for him! He knows, Mom and Dad will always have a bed ready for him when he comes home too:)))

My Love to all at AMTC, and HALO… Thank you for being the family friendly, Christ Centered, group of people that you are! Steven feels LOVED by you all, and we know that isn’t just a feeling … thank you for all the opportunities AMTC has afforded to him! Sorry about the long book letter:)

My best advice to parents out there, LOVE your kids so much that the business is just a fun way to express the talents God has given them!!!

In Christ’s Love and service,

Bringing back values to television and film…

Hello Carey,

I received your message about posting my comments on your blog. I don’t know if you received my email because I was at the airport, and I sent my response via cell phone, but absolutely. All of my success is first and foremost, God; all the glory be to Him and I am not ashamed to say it. He led me to AMTC to get my start. I will pray that God continues to have favor on your family, because what you are doing for kids and young adults in this industry is amazing. The talent industry needs to have all of God’s children stand up and declare war on the enemy, by standing up for Jesus and bringing back values to television and film.

We need to continue to make a statement and let the world know, that there are people who still believe in morals and values. AMTC opens up the doors to up and coming performers that are truly role models who represent God through their testimony and their God given talents. I will continue to testify and glorify God’s holy name in all that I do, knowing that He is going to continue to take me higher …................all the way to the Oscars!!!!. That night I will make sure the industry knows who got me there. Once again, Roberto and I thank the AMTC family for giving us our start and for this we will always be in debt to you.

Sincerely,
Laimarie Serrano

Singers: Get the 411

I LOVE being a Regional Director for AMTC! My job allows me to travel and meet so many wonderfully talented models, actors, singers, and dancers.

Growing up in this industry as a model and a trained singer, I am often surprised at the “raw” talent in vocalists – singers with very little or NO training. Many of you come in and blow me away with your singing! Here are a few tips to incorporate into your daily vocal training to help make you the BEST singer you can be.

MOST IMPORTANT: Always warm up your voice before singing. Take 10 to 15 minutes and start with facial movement, rolling of the tongue, and singing scales. If you don’t know how to do this, ask a choir teacher at school or in church. You can also learn “do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do.” Never sing without warming up! You can strain and damage your vocal chords.

Limit dairy products and foods high in sugar, especially before singing in an event. Always drink lots of water.

Open your mouth when singing to AVOID a nasally tone in your voice.

Enunciate your words when singing so that everyone will understand you.

Song choice is key. Make sure to choose songs in your vocal range that are age and style appropriate for you.

Practice, Practice, Practice! You should be practicing daily. Sing in front of the mirror; critique yourself as objectively as possible and try to improve your performance. Pay attention to other performers and learn from them.

The music industry is changing! Learn a musical instrument. Try to write music. You never know what you can do UNTIL you try!

Wanting to be a singer is not enough. You MUST pursue your dreams to make it happen. This takes determination, hard work, practice, and continued performing in whatever venue you can get. Church, community theater, and schools can be great sources for training, experience, and performance.

Good luck to you all! And remember to use your God-given talents to glorify God!

“We all have different gifts, each of which came because of the grace God gave us.” Romans 12:6

Leaving AMTC Land: What Happens Next?

7 Steps to Help Guide You Down Your Path:

The fast paced, exciting, adrenaline-filled week of AMTC has ended. You say goodbye to your newly made friends, take a breath in and realize you did it! The week went well and ended positively- you learned, you performed, and you thrived. For most, AMTC is the first taste and experience of the industry- all put together for you and presented safely in a pretty awesome package!

But after it all ends, what do you do to make AMTC your everyday life, your career? How do you take the next step down the road that so many eager stars before you have paved?

Step 1: Rest.
Take a day or two to unwind and relax.

Step 2: Take Comfort.
Take comfort and pride in your accomplishment. You did it!

Step 3: Process Everything.
Take in all you learned. Collect your notes from seminars, workshops, call backs and/or speed networking. Write down the advice agents gave you while it is still fresh.

Step 4: Appreciation.
Most important step! Thank God for the opportunity and strength. Thank your family or loved ones who helped you through the process. Thank any sponsors who helped you get to AMTC. Thank the VIP’s you met by sending cards and 1 picture. Thank your Director or Instructor and any staff who helped you on-site through the process. This is the best training for your life in the industry. Enthusiasm and appreciation are musts!

Step 5: Game Plan.
Sit down with your family, loved ones, or trusted advisor, and decide what is best for you to take your career to the next step. Do a little soul searching. All plans and paths will be different, but all include several of these:

*Finish School!
This is a must for all game plans.

*Work on Yourself and Your Trade.
Improve your skills and take local classes. Take the advice you learned at AMTC and go with it. Bottom line- get involved in everything you can in your town. There is no excuse for you not to be involved!

*Visit Local Agents.
Visit and try to sign with a reputable local agent. If you live near a nice sized market (Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, etc), schedule an appointment to meet. See if it’s a right fit. If so, this is a great way to stay at home while pursuing the industry. *Important- Run names of anyone local by AMTC Staff or your Director for reputation and advice.

*Take a 2-3 Day Trip to Visit a Major Market.
Visit major markets (like LA or NY) to meet with contacts you made from AMTC. This is a good way to test the waters, gauge the VIP’s interest in you, see if you like the city, and if you are ready to make the jump into that market. You can make these appointments on your own or ask the help of your Director or Instructor.

*Work or Test in a Major Market During School Breaks.
An agent you met at AMTC, feel comfortable with, and are excited about is ready to test you and/or work with you during breaks from school or through direct bookings. Many successful actors or models begin with this step.

*Move for Extended Period to Major Market.
An agent you met at AMTC, feel comfortable with, and are excited about is ready to sign you- wants you to move immediately! In this case, a normal length of time to relocate is 2-6 months. This is a big and exciting step! You must involve your AMTC Director or Instructor for help!

Step 6: Meet.
Plan a time to talk to your Director or Coach from AMTC- in person or over the phone. You take the initiative. Talk to them about your game plan. See if they have any advice or how they can help.

Step 7: Take Action.
Yes, the Talent Industry can sometimes be the “hurry up and wait” industry. So, be patient, research, and ask lots of questions. Put trust in the knowledge you gained at AMTC. However (this sounds like a contradiction), don’t wait for the industry to come to you- take it on by storm!

When someone asks:

Q: Will I be jetted off all-expenses-paid across the country and onto a TV show, starring role on Broadway, or cover of a magazine?

A: 100% NO!

Q: How then did all of the huge AMTC successes get their first big break after leaving AMTC?

A: It takes…
Hard Work
Follow Up
Grace and Charm
Talent
Making Contacts
Attitude
Positivity
Drive
Spirit
Appreciation
God

Step 8: Wild Card
If you have completed the above steps and need more help- email me! AMTC and I are more than willing to help anyway we can. In addition, we will try to put you in touch with a working AMTC success story- for more tips and advice.

Before Step 8: You must have taken a good shot at steps 1–7!

Lexy@millielewis.com

Warning: What Not To Do!
Commonly made mistakes after AMTC include:

*Waiting for an Agent or Manager to contact you. They are busy. 95% of the time you will need to initiate contact! Maybe they missed you or didn’t know you were serious about getting started.

*Not sending them what they asked for immediately… like Polaroids or a video.

*Being “wishy washy.” Be positive, polite, and responsive. They need to really LIKE you as a person- not just as potential talent. No one is so beautiful or talented that they can get away with a lukewarm attitude.

*Waiting too long to make initial follow-up with contacts. 3+ months is too long! The industry is fast paced and things change quickly – strike while it’s hot and interest is there.

*If you are signed immediately after AMTC, the work is not over. You must keep weekly contact with your Agent or Manager. Send cookies, stop by with coffee, drop an email. Be their favorite client! If you stay on their mind, they are more likely to think of you for a casting or job.

Be Careful of Franchise Schools

AMTC conducted a Talent Search in Birmingham last weekend. We met some great families! I had the opportunity to see promising actors, singers, dancers, and models. However, watching the local models audition was sometimes disturbing. Several of them strutted the runway with an exaggerated walk and poses than have been out of style since the 1980’s. Yet, they seemed proud of themselves. They also had pictures they believed to be “professional” that were very poor. When I looked at their applications, I noticed they had all been involved in a local franchise modeling school. Unfortunately, a better word for “involved” might be “taken.”

I urge everyone in America to be careful of franchise modeling schools. While good ones may exist, I have yet to find one. The common denomenators in franchise schools seem to be high pressure sales, half-truths, outdated training, and poor pictures. I believe reputable agencies feel sad, just like we do at AMTC, when a franchise school graduate walks in for an interview. We know they have spent a lot of money, and most of what they learned about the modeling or talent industry is wrong. Education is important, but it must be a good education. It must be honest. It must be current.

So, parents, teens, and talent of all ages, be cautious of big talk, hard sales, and false promises. Follow your gut feeling. Listen to your heart. Almost everyone I have talked to said, “I didn’t feel right about it.”

Introducing the new AMTC Insider & Scholarship Program

Hey everybody, I’m excited to announce some big news today…

Many of you have discovered our new AMTC Insider club. And you may have been wondering when you were going to hear from us…

The Backstory

We’ve always had an email newsletter where we sent out news, success stories, and other fun stuff, but with AMTC Insider we decided to do something a bit more ambitious. From the start, we’ve been looking for a way to make the AMTC Insider program something special. With so many boring email newsletters going around out there, we wanted to provide the AMTC community with something informative, useful, and fun.

So, we started thinking about all the things we might do and then we had a bright idea… Why not award an AMTC scholarship to a lucky Insider every month? As of yesterday, the AMTC Insider registration page stated:

“Every month we give a random AMTC Insider a scholarship to the upcoming AMTC!”

At first this seemed like a great way to reward the Insiders, and a fun thing to do. But then it occurred to us—how do we choose the winner each month? Random selection wouldn’t be fair, so how do we make this fair for everyone? How do we award scholarships to those that really deserve to win? We gave it a lot of thought and today we’re proud to announce the AMTC Insider Scholarship Program.

AMTC Insider Scholarship Program

Millie Lewis AMTC will award a scholarship to attend our international competition to one Insider every month! This scholarship to AMTC, including coaching and advice, is valued at $2,595.00.

How it works

Every month, each and every AMTC Insider has the opportunity to submit an essay on the topic, “Why I deserve an AMTC scholarship.” We’re looking for special life stories, and why you want to be an actor, model, singer, or dancer. What in your life has pushed you toward this dream?

Every month we’ll publish the finalists. At the end of the month, we’ll announce the winner here on the Millie Lewis Blog with your winning essay! Also, you’ll be featured in the next month’s AMTC Insider email newsletter.

Submit your essay

It’s very easy to submit your essay for consideration. Here’s how:

Write your essay. (500 words max)

Prepare at least one photo of yourself. The photo(s) will not be judged and will be used only if you win.

Email your essay, with photo(s) attached, to amtcinsider@millielewis.com with the subject line “AMTC Scholarship Submission”.

The clock’s ticking…

We are eagerly awaiting your submissions over the next month. A winner will be chosen by July 31, 2007. The winner will be posted here on the Millie Lewis Blog shortly thereafter.

For more info, check out the official AMTC Insider Rules page.

Signing off…

We just want to thank all of you for being patient as we’ve been developing AMTC Insider and the scholarship program. We can’t wait to read your essays!

Sincerely,
Carey Arban & the entire Millie Lewis team

Photo Shoot 101: Posing

I am Glynis Selina Arban, a NYC photographer for agencies like DNA and NY Models. I shoot for Nylon Magazine. I am also Millie Lewis’s granddaughter and part of “generation #3” for AMTC. One of my jobs as a photographer is helping new models learn how to pose and move in front of the camera.

Mistake #1: Standing still. Not moving anything. Expecting the photographer to tell you every small movement.

Solution: In most cases, models must know how to move on their own. Depending on the mood of the shoot and the clothing, a model must be able to show appropriate emotions and movements. Study magazines, catalogues, major fashion and commercial agency websites, and practice in front of a mirror. Ask a friend to shoot you with a digital camera. Never stop moving, although movement can be minimal- such as shifting weight, turning to the side, or stepping backward or forward.

Mistake #2: Cheescake, dated poses or poses that do not match the outfit or the age of the model.

Solution: Stick with what your body naturally wants to do. Kids and teens: be a little “slouchy,” kind of like you’re hanging out with your friends- not like a Vogue shoot. Don’t use an extreme pose in a casual outfit.

Mistake #3: Fake smiles

Solution: Never hold a smile too long. Mix up expressions. Make yourself laugh- even if it’s a fake laugh. Make the noise (“ha ha ha”), and it will look more real than a plastic smile. Practice laughing in the mirror to see what looks best. Be able to produce a small smile, a “no tooth” smile, and a serious look with lips slightly parted.

Mistake #4: Acting embarrassed or rude if a photographers asks you to jump, dance, walk, run, or spin.

Solution: This is your job. Keep a great attitude. Commit 100% to the movement. Don’t halfway try. You can ask questions, like “what sort of dancing do you want?” Then go for it with gusto. Even if you aren’t a great dancer or jumper, you will be respected for your excellent effort. Look at movement pictures in magazines. A former AMTC Overall Winner was sent on her first big job, asked to dance, and she started crying. She was sent home, and her career fizzled.

Do you have anything to add? Tips or tricks?

Watch this YouTube video of top model, Naomi Campbell, on a W cover shoot. She is not an AMTC grad, but this video is a perfect example of being uninhibited in front of a camera.

Janet Kyle: a Tribute

Janet Kyle, Owner of Turnabout Talent in Stuart, FL, for over 40 years, passed away April 14 after a brief illness. Janet was one of 4 AMTC “Lifetime Ahcievement Award” recipeints in our 25 year history.

From Myke, Janet’s daughter, who always came with Janet to AMTC…
“My mother was a kind and courageous woman who enjoyed life, always moved forward and sought the best in every person and situation. We have all, indeed, been fortunate to be a loved and important part of her long and happy life. She has gone to Glory with the wings of Angels wrapped around her.”

From Kim Myers
“I am so sad today at the news of my dearest friend Janet. I reflect on the many wonderful and happy times that we’ve shared over the years. As many would agree, our lives are that more enriched just because we knew her. The many “sleep-overs” (that is what we called them) that we had in her Stuart home were always filled with laughter, dancing and stories! Her morning breakfast routines were hysterical! She would waltz into my room dancing with the morning paper and a cup of coffee, singing “There’s No Business Like Show Business” – her and Ethel Merman! I will forever keep those moments close and pull them out in the years to come. Her impact will live on for years.”

From Carey Arban
“Janet Kyle was my role model. I can honestly say that she was like an angel of light in this world. One of my best Janet Kyle memories is when she brought a rap group to AMTC. She was their manager. There seemed to be a lot of them- boys and girls. They were big and looked a little “rough” in their oversized gear. Yet they circled attentively and respectfully around Janet. She instructed them with her soft voice and a twinkle in her eye.

It is hard for me to say what an inspiration Janet Kyle was to me. She was a light of wisdom, wit, and love- with a joy for life that was undeniable and awesome. She brought so many gifts to the talent industry, to AMTC, and to the thousands of lives she touched directly and indirectly. I will never forget Janet!

Lose the glam- Learn to look like a real model!

In todays society young girls are bombarded with overstlyed ads, sexy icons & peer pressure to look like their friends. The big secret- modeling and the industry encourage just the opposite.

Why? Beauty is natural. Anyone can look fabulous with a ton of makeup, big hair, high heels & studio lighting. But, who can look just as good without? Models!

Models working in major markets- NY, LA, Miami, Paris, etc… do NOT wear makeup on castings or to meet with important clients. Why? Their natural beauty would be hidden. Instead, the attitude is embraced- “I am so cool, I do not need to look like everyone else”

Attn all girls!- Drop the eyeliner, the makeup, the highlighted hair, the heels & uncomfortable clothing.

Katherine Sims, a very talented AMTC Kid from Miami is pictured below before & after. Before she was a confused newcomer trying to break into the industry & after she is a real working model. What changed? She dropped the sexy pose, makeup & overstyling. She embraced her unique look. Katherine is signed with Wilhelmina Miami & Jet Set Models in LA.

How do we reach AMTC-qualified teens and kids?

How should AMTC advertise?

AMTC is looking for new advertising ideas. While we’ve always enjoyed good word-of-mouth from successful AMTC grads, top 40 radio ads have been our primary means to spread the word in new areas. We have a feeling we need to do more to reach out to talented teens and kids over the internet, but where do we start?

Check out this radio ad (1.6MB mp3) that we ran before a recent search in Annopolis, Maryland. This is a perfect example of what we’ve been doing for the past 10+ years.

But now that radio seems less effective, the big questions is: where are you looking for news, ads, and entertainment?

Radio (what type? and what hours?)

TV (cable or network? favorite shows?)

Internet ads on other sites?

Postcards in the mail?

Classified ads in the back of fun magazines, like “Teen Vogue?”

MySpace? (btw, we do have a MySpace page now)

So, where are you? Drop us a comment below and let us know! We appreciate your thoughts.
