The Talent Temptation

And no man taketh this honor unto himself, but that he is called of God… (Hebrews 5:4 KJV)

Oh, how tempting it is for us to forget from Whom our talent came. God gives each of His children gifts. Some of His gifts are more easily seen than others. Beauty, voice, charisma, dance, or athleticism are magnetic gifts. They move other people to look, admire, and be drawn to those performers who show them. A great gift can become a great temptation.

Therefore, performers are tempted by the world, and the world is currently controlled by dark forces. Honors befall the bearers of such talents beginning in early childhood. Well meaning passers by will comment, ‘How beautiful, he or she should be a model,’ or ‘Wow, what a voice,’ or ‘You should get that child on a stage.’ Compliments continue as talented children grow.

Home coming queens, cheerleaders, athletes, dance stars, actors, and soloists are applauded in school, church, competitions, and communities. Some rise to become stars. Honors and accolades are frequent. Their recipients are tempted toward narcissism and popularity, or by rewards, benefits, and beliefs that their lovely gifts are self-created and totally deserved.

Therefore, should Christian parents hide or ignore such gifts? Certainly not! They are given by God for His purpose. Instead, they should shower their children with Godly counsel, words, fellowship, and service. Nurture their gifts, and dress them with humility until they can dress themselves. Therewith, they withstand the Talent Temptation and bring admiring glances to the God they serve, for such is the purpose of talent.
