More Than Just a Pretty Face?

DEC

2009

Today’s fashion industry is full of beautiful people all hoping to grace the covers of Vogue and walk the runways of Paris and Milan. But modeling isn’t just wearing beautiful clothes. Modeling is acting; it’s conveying an emotion without saying a word.

Take a look at the pictures surrounding this post. What about these photos stands out to you the most? Is it the designer clothes, beautiful surroundings, great shoes or crazy hats? Could it be the expressions on the models faces? The emotion in their eyes? The graceful way in which they move?

What do you think was happening on set? What inspired these models? Maybe a certain song was blasting out of the studio ipod: what do you think it was?

Yes these are beautiful people, but they are so much more. Do you agree that acting is the foundation of performing?

I agree 100% that modeling is about acting. If you can't convey emotions through your eyes and movements, than the pictures come across as "cold." It's all about thinking of a certain time or place and trying to get those emotions across to the camera. Models have to be actors too.

So true!!!! Models are beautiful but they also have to be believable.

You are so right! In order to have camera presence there must be personality. It really does behoove a model to have acting ability so that emotion can be evoked when in front of the camera, which makes for a successful photo layout.

Love it! This is so true and we can all learn from this! I'm imagining Lucinda Williams playing for Cali's shoot! What do you guys think?

The best pictures are the ones that tell a story. There may be a smirk on the face or a raise of the eyebrow that will make that photo memorable. No matter how breathtaking the surroundings or how beautiful the accessories or wardrobe the best photos are of people who make you notice THEM. This can only occur when a person knows how to "speak" with their face. This is definitely acting. Any person seriously wanting to pursue any part of the entertainment industry must learn how to express through words, body language and facial expression. It takes more that beauty!

I'm no expert, but I do believe that you are still drawn to the eyes of a model's face, as well as the clothing. The eyes tell the truth.

Hey, I am 19, live in Canada and am starting my acting/modelling career, I agree with this post fully. Does anyone know of any organizations like this one in Canada? rebecca.gomez@live.ca
